Field Crew Chief
Corner 2 Corner Land Surveying
SUMMARY:
The Survey Party Chief will plan and conduct proposed field survey projects, manage the field survey teams, (if necessary) prepare, process, and coordinate the required field survey work (boundary, topographic, or construction layout) and daily survey logs as part of public and private commercial, residential, and industrial development projects based on client’s intent/vision, budget, timeline, jurisdictional requirements, and community needs and concerns. In addition, the Survey Party Chief will lead the company's field survey team in the field.
DUTIES:
1. Acts as Field Crew Chief for a field survey crew engaged in making plans and/or surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors work, and provides input for evaluation of members of the field survey crew; is the senior field personnel in survey and mapping methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures.
2. Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including robotic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles; prepares field notes and drawings; performs field surveying for boundary, topographic, construction, and flood management projects, including installing surveying construction stakes, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
3. Performs complex surveying calculations using engineering calculator, laptop computer, graphics software, such as Carlson Survey/Autocad; analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy; provides survey information for Geographic Information System (GIS); and prepares finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, ALTA Surveys, corner staking, etc., and other survey reports.
4. Research existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents; and maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems.
5. Performs the duties of the Crew Chief and acts as Land Surveyor in supervisor’s absence; performs field surveys, including staking, boundary control, horizontal and vertical controls, hydrographic, topographic and flood surveys.
6. Ensures the integration of field data and records into completed maps, plats, drawings, and records.
7. Assists in construction, design, topographic, hydrographic, property and all types of control surveys.
8. Assumes responsibility for the company survey equipment and oversees equipment maintenance and inventory. Workspace and vehicle cleanliness.
9. Produces accurate detailed maps with accurate surveying data in a timely manner.
10. Sets up, operates, and adjusts all types of survey equipment, including a level, transit, and electronic measuring device.
11. Makes trigonometric calculations, such as adjusting traverses and calculation of coordinates, control points, quantities, and areas.
12. Prepares and reviews maps, drawings, sketches, plats, and simple reports from field notes and makes recommendations
13. Trains other crew members/survey technicians on the processes and field procedures with use of equipment and gear.
14. May perform mapping compliance, safety compliance, or PDH related compliance as assignment to satisfy any training/experience requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
15. Ability to: assign, prioritize, schedule, and delegate work; explain technical concepts to others; provide constructive feedback; direct, train, and evaluate the performance of staff; enforce safety practices; work independently; read and interpret engineering plans; collect, calculate, and adjust mathematical computations such as distances, traverses, and elevations; analyze data; operate and maintain complex precision surveying instruments, engineering calculators, and personal computers; perform difficult algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and precise engineering calculations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele staff, engineers, developers, contractors, and the general public.
16. Provide general, complex, detailed, and technical information to a variety of clients and sub consultants, including the general client, team, public, professional, and technical coworkers, developers and elected officials. Communicate directly and effectively with customers under demanding conditions that include high work volume, firm deadlines, confrontational situations, disputed interpretations, and complex explanations to individuals with diverse levels of technical expertise. Develop, prepare, and present plans, reports, supporting documentation, and presentations.
17. Read, understand, interpret, and analyze complex regulations, standards and a wide variety of information related to planning and environmental issues available in a wide variety of formats.
18. Analyze a variety of information or issues and effectively use independent judgment in interpretation of information, decision making, problem resolution, and compliance requirements.
19. Conduct field visits and inspections at construction sites and a wide variety of outdoor locations by safely navigating all types of terrain, potentially hazardous sites, and in all weather conditions.
20. Travel to and participate in a variety of meetings, public hearings, conferences, seminars, and related activities throughout local and regional area that may occur on evenings or weekends.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in an office setting and at field locations throughout the State of West Virginia, but not limited to West Virginia only. Sits or stands for long periods of time. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Work outside the office is required to complete survey, site investigations, on-site reviews and meetings. Outdoor work requires the ability to move about uneven terrain, in wetlands, waterways, hillsides, and being around heavy equipment. The use of appropriate safety equipment and follows established work safety policies, practices and procedures.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES:
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the principles, practices, regulations, techniques in the field of land use, environmental planning, and transportation planning.
2. Knowledge of current planning research methods and information gathering techniques.
3. Knowledge of standard procedures, methods, and principles of land surveying.
4. Knowledge of basic principles and practices related to economic development, housing, growth management, and other community preservation areas.
5. Knowledge of basic cartography and graphic design principles and methods.
6. Knowledge of basic site planning and architectural design principles.
7. Knowledge of Federal, state, city, county, local land use laws and regulations.
8. Skill in managing competing interests under strict timelines.
9. Skill in using computers and software applications in one or more of the following areas: graphics, presentations, database management, mapping, data analysis, evaluation.
10. Skill in working with a diverse group of individuals with varying levels of subject area expertise.
11. Ability to work as a member of a professional team of fellow co-workers.
12. Ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence.
13. Ability to learn, comprehends, and applies organizational procedures, methods, and policies.
14. Ability to interpret maps and prepare graphic materials for visual presentations.
15. Ability to effectively organize and participate in design team, project management and public meetings.
16. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with our clientele either public or private.
Education Requirements:
1. 2- or 4-Year degree in Land Surveying.
Experience Requirements:
Minimum of 3 years of survey experience.
Certifications Requirements:
NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying Certification.
Special Requirements:
A current, valid West Virginia State driver’s license at time of appointment and maintained always thereafter to operate a vehicle on company business.
SUPERVISOR:
Surveyor in Charge of branch office.
WORK HOURS:
minimum 40 hours per week
POSITION:
Full-time
HOURLY PAY:
$25 (Hourly rate increase if employee opts for no medical insurance).
