TITLE: Surveyor

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under administrative direction; directs and administers the survey operations of crews conducting construction surveys, preliminary surveys for design of engineering projects, horizontal and vertical control surveys, and boundary surveys; initiates continuous update of survey technology and equipment Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) year associate degree in Surveying or Civil Engineering Technology plus five (5) years of experience as a registered surveyor that includes proven supervisory responsibility. Possession of a valid State of Ohio vehicle operators license required. NOTE: Employee must be a registered surveyor as certified by the State of Ohio (can be obtained after hire if currently certified in another state). Must be able to access the various worksites.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES: (The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification).
65% (1) Plans, coordinates and supervises work of field survey crews performing survey projects for highway/bridge divisions; reviews and assigns survey projects and work orders to survey crews; coordinates the activities of contractors and the appropriate project manager of division, for the timely completion of survey projects; assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures involving multiple divisions of the department.
20% (2) Performs analysis of survey data and makes comparisons and calculations for certification of land and engineering surveys, preparation of maps, land boundaries, final measurements and quantities, and the monitoring of contractor methods of horizontal and vertical control on construction projects; writes specifications and agreements for survey work to be completed by consultants; evaluates consultant qualifications, quality of work, and makes recommendation for hire; explains and interprets survey finings to engineers, contractors, public officials, or other professionals. 
15% (3) Determines and advises party chiefs on proper methods; assigns standards of accuracy and thoroughness; maintains inventory of survey equipment; researches new methods and technology associated with performing surveys, and requisitions new equipment; develops procedural documents for survey crews; reviews reports and other documentation prepared by survey crews in order to ensure compliance with established standards; maintains records and prepares reports.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Necessary to perform duties (*Indicates developed after employment).
(1) Comprehensive knowledge of (a) standards, methods, practices, computations and equipment used in surveying work, (b) public works construction, reconstruction and maintenance projects, (c) state and local control systems for boundaries and geodetic control, retracement/establishment of boundary lines, (d) supervision practices, (e) department policies and procedures*, (f) department goals and objectives*; thorough knowledge of (g) bridge and road engineering; ability to (h) communicate effectively, (i) deal with variables and determine specific action.
(2) Comprehensive knowledge of (a), (b), (c), (d), (e)*, (f)*; thorough knowledge of (g); ability to (h), (i), (j) use geometry, trigonometry and calculus, (k) use proper research methods, (l) prepare meaningful, concise and accurate reports, (m) deal with non-verbal symbols in formulas, equations or graphs, (n) define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
